A delegation of over 30 international youths with Chinese backgrounds is on a journey to explore their roots in East China's Fujian province from July 29 to Aug 7.

For Hnin Yu Wa Di Hlaing, a Chinese language teacher from Myanmar, the trip fulfilled a generational promise. Her father always reminded her never to forget her roots, she said, recalling how her late grandfather traveled to Fuzhou in 2010 to locate relatives by knocking on doors.

Some in the delegation were impressed by China's modern developments. Jimmy Chen, a Chinese-American visiting the country for the first time in eight years, expressed amazement at the seamless digital ecosystem, which gives access to tickets and hotel bookings from everyday apps like WeChat and Alipay. "Now, my grandparents like to use (AI model) Doubao," he said.

The journey also led to a visit to the Museum of Foochow Arsenal. Thu Ta Min Htet, a young diaspora member from Myanmar, said that the exhibition demonstrated China's rapid development during the hardships of the 19th century, adding that he felt immensely proud of his Chinese heritage and Fujian roots.

The 10-day event guides the participants through major cities, including Fuzhou, Quanzhou, and Xiamen. During the trip, they're experiencing intangible cultural heritage, tracing the history of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, and building closer cultural bonds.
