The Intangible Cultural Heritage Carnival at Fuzhou's Three Lanes and Seven Alleys Historic District has become a major attraction, drawing visitors eager to experience traditional crafts firsthand. Located in historic courtyards along Huang Lane, the daily experience spaces, open from 10 am to 8 pm, allow visitors to "touch" history through hands-on interaction with master artisans.
At the woodcarving station, onlookers held their breath as Lin Xiumin, a Fujian provincial-level representative inheritor of Fuzhou woodcarving, guided her carving tool across boxwood, gradually revealing the delicate contour of a jasmine-bearing girl.
Nearby, visitors tried their hand at making lacquer fans under the guidance of Lin Xianzhou, a Fuzhou municipal-level representative inheritor. Colors swirled in water, creating unique patterns on each fan. "I not only watched the masters at work, but also created something I could take home," said college student Chen Siyu, proudly displaying her finished piece.

The appeal extended to other crafts as well. Families lined up to print traditional New Year pictures from woodblocks, while others painted and oiled their own lanterns or pressed tea cakes while learning about tea culture.

For many visitors, the hands-on experience proved more meaningful than passive observation. "Letting children touch and create helps culture take root," said a tourist making New Year prints with his son. "Now I understand that these crafts represent real living wisdom."
The carnival transforms intangible cultural heritage from something distant into something personal and memorable. As visitors leave with their handmade souvenirs, they also carry away a deeper connection to Fuzhou's cultural traditions.
The event continued through March 8, offering visitors daily opportunities to learn from master artisans and forge personal connections with China's rich intangible cultural heritage.
