Imagine standing on Mars, gazing at Earth or strolling through ancient Chang'an with the poet Li Bai. Perhaps you'd like to explore the mysterious sacrificial pits of Sanxingdui? At Fuzhou's China Shipbuilding Culture Park in Mawei district, the newly launched VR Grand Space lets you experience all this and more through an immersive journey across time and space.
Officially opened on August 16, this attraction is now a centerpiece of the "Shipbuilding Night Wonders" series and a must-visit for locals and tourists.
Located opposite the century-old Engine Workshop, the VR Grand Space is adjacent to the Water Mirror Plaza, where the musical fountain performs nightly at 7 pm, 8 pm, and 9 pm. As night falls, the park comes alive with shifting lights and shadows, attracting visitors to queue for the VR experience.
Once the headset is on, visitors are instantly "teleported". One moment, they're wandering among the glowing lights of the historic shipyard; the next, they're standing before Sanxingdui's iconic bronze masks or exploring a futuristic Mars base. "History and the future feel so real!" exclaimed one excited child, reaching out to touch the virtual artifacts.
"We use VR technology to break the walls of time and space. Night tours become more than just a visual experience — they become a full-body journey through history and imagination," said Wu Yanzu, head of the VR Grand Space.
The project combines virtual reality with night tours, using light, shadow, and technology to tell stories spanning centuries. Children completing the experience can even receive a space-themed astronaut eraser as a souvenir.
Visitors can dive into a variety of immersive VR adventures. They can step onto a futuristic Mars base in "Mission to Mars", don virtual historical costumes and wander the bustling streets of Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), travel 3,000 years back to experience the Shu culture and uncover the stories behind the golden masks in “Sanxingdui Awakens", or join a Sino-Egyptian archaeological team in "Return to the Pyramids" to explore connections between pyramids and celestial bodies while learning about ancient Egyptian myths.
Beyond the VR Grand Space, the Museum of Foochow Arsenal offers other tech-driven experiences, including a 3D film where historic warships seem to break through walls and an AI interactive zone featuring digital representations of historical figures like Zuo Zongtang (1812–1885).
Since the park opened for night tours on August 2, Mawei district of Fuzhou has aimed to create a destination that makes you want to stay — and come back for more. Alongside VR, guests can enjoy stargazing camps, musical fountain shows, museum night programs, theater performances, and vibrant night markets. Upcoming attractions, including the seaplane hangar and tunnel multimedia hall, promise even more immersive experiences.
