Guling (Kuliang) National Tourist Resort is situated in the eastern suburbs of Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, about 12 kilometers away from the downtown area. lt covers an area of 66.52 square kilometers and boasts an average altitude of 750 meters. Renowned for its cool breeze, thin mist, cedar trees, and ancient houses, Guling has been known as a popular tourist destination and a summer resort since ancient times. Starting from 1886, people from over 20 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and Russia, residing in China began building villas in Guling. With 366 villas of various styles in its heyday, Guling emerged as an international community where Chinese and Western residents lived in harmony together and the two cultures blended harmoniously. With favorable ecological environment and profound cultural heritage, Guling has gradually developed into a well-functioning and fully equipped recreational tourist resort that integrates various tourism resources, including the landscape of Mindu (the ancient name of Fuzhou that literally means the capital of Fujian), Chinese and Western summer resort cultures, and folk customs.

During his visit to the U.S. in February 2012, then Vice-President Xi Jinping recounted the Kuliang story, which touched both Chinese and American peoples and made Kuliang renowned both at home and abroad. 

On June 28, 2023, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the Bond with Kuliang: 2023 China-U.S. People-to-People Friendship Forum. Amity between people holds the key to the relationship between countries, and the people are the cornerstone of its growth, Xi said. He expressed the hope that the people from China and the U.S. will continue to write the Kuliang story and carry forward the special bonds, so that the friendship between them can stay forever strong and robust like the thousand-year-old cedar trees in Kuliang. On June 24, 2024, President Xi sent a congratulatory letter to the Bond with Kuliang: 2024 China-U.S. Youth Festival. Noting that the century-long bond with Kuliang is a story of friendly exchanges between the Chinese and American people, Xi said in the letter that he is pleased to see young people from all walks of life in China and the U.S. gather in Fuzhou to relive the story of Kuliang, pass on the love of Kuliang, and enhance exchanges and understanding between the two peoples.

In recent years, Guling (Kuliang) National Tourist Resort has successively won the titles of National Ecological Tourism Demonstration Zone, National Tourist Resort, the first batch of "Refreshing Fujian, Climate Paradise" Cool Summer Destinations, Fujian province's first batch of key film and television outdoor shooting bases, Fujian's Top Ten Cool Summer Destinations, China-U.S. Youth Exchange Base, etc.
