Margaret Carmichael

Margaret Carmichael, born in 1955, is a descendant of the Lydia Trimble family and a renowned American dancer, actress, and director. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and Philosophy from Sarah Lawrence College and a Master of Fine Arts in Acting and Directing from the University of Iowa. Over the course of her distinguished career, Margaret has received numerous honors, including a New York Dance and Performance Bessie Award—regarded as the highest recognition for modern and contemporary dance—and a Tony Award nomination for Best Choreography. She also appeared in the acclaimed film Scent of a Woman.

In addition to performing, Margaret has taught dance and theater at prestigious institutions such as Harvard University and Florida State University and has worked with several prominent dance and theater companies. Transitioning her focus to writing in 2023, Margret is currently writing a book that delves into the legacy of the Lydia Trimble family. Lydia Trimble, a devoted Christian missionary from the Methodist Episcopal Church, embarked on her mission in China in December 1889, at the young age of 26. Over the span of more than 50 years, she dedicated herself to missionary work and education in Fujian province. In 1891, she founded Yuzhen Girls' Junior High School (the predecessor of Fuqing No 2 High School), and in 1908, she established the South China Women's College (the predecessor of Fujian Hwa Nan Women's College). Margaret's great-great-grandmother was a cousin of Lydia Trimble's. In 2022, Margaret married Greg Carmichael, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Iowa.
