The Kuliang Chat on Climate Change: China and US in Action event was held at the Haixia Youth Center on June 27, where Chinese and American guests gathered to share viewpoints and exchange ideas on protecting the Earth.
Zhu Xiaoming, director of the Yangtze River Delta Carbon Neutrality Strategy Development Institute at Southeast University, emphasized that the primary task of decarbonization involves an energy revolution. Zhu advocated for the replacement of fossil fuels with non-fossil and renewable energy sources, saying that, "Achieving the comprehensive coverage of renewable energy is the best way to address climate change."
Diego Montero, senior program director for strategy and partnerships of the Institute for Global Decarbonization Progress, believes that mitigation and adaptation are essential strategies in combating climate change. He emphasized their complementary nature, stressing the goal of minimizing carbon emissions while realizing economic growth.
Zhu Liucai, chief expert and researcher at the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, highlighted the necessity of concerted efforts from government departments, businesses and civil societies to tackle global climate challenges.
"To uphold sustainable development and protect the most pristine ecosystems, it is crucial to avoid human interference. This is also the rationale behind the nation's establishment of a protected area framework with a focus on national parks," said Liao Lingyun, associate professor at the College of Landscape Architecture and Art of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University.
Addressing climate change, a challenge faced collectively by humanity, nations across the globe should enhance dialogue and cooperation, and Chinese and American youth bear the responsibility of contributing to the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, said participants of the event.
